Hip Pain

Causes of hip pain

The hips are strong weight bearing ball-and-socket joints. They have a put up with an awful lot of impact through our walking, running, jumping and exercise, especially weight lifting.

Pain can come from a variety of causes. Muscular tension is the one we see most frequently in the Wokingham Osteopaths & Massage clinic, especially with the number of patients we treat who are working from home. If your muscles aren’t stretched on a regular basis when placed into a shorten position they contract to adopt the position in which you place yourself most regularly.

Hip pain can also be caused by referral from the lower back where the nerves running down the back of the leg can have pressure placed upon them, or posterior hip muscles can guard against a traumatic injury and reduce hip mobility as well as cause discomfort. If the pain being experienced is a sharp shooting pain down the back of the hip into the thigh there’s a chance it may be Sciatica, which is a symptom of nerve compression and not a condition.

Hip conditions can also be a symptom of knee issues, whereby the hip muscles contract, causing tension and strain the muscles which also affect the knees.

In the Wokingham Osteopaths & Massage clinic we have seen patients with hip pain from many different causes; from arthritic and degenerative hips to spasms from kicking a football against a wall for 4 hours straight.

Hip joint health can be maintained by regular stretching of the lower back and hip muscles, not sitting in one position for too long especially if you are a desk worker, regular exercise and massage.
